Avoiding Pitfalls with Home Remodeling Contractors (Part 1)

The content below is a transcript from the home remodeling panel discussion at the Motion Picture and Television Relief Fund’s conference Deal With It: A Women’s Conference, held in Los Angeles, Ca on August 5, 2018:

When you have your budget for a remodel, how can you make sure all your materials are included in the price?

It can be tricky. First, you want to make sure that your contract is very detailed. There are very few general contractors out there that will truly provide what I consider a detailed contract that actually describes what you are going to get. For example, if you are going to get cabinetry for your remodel, the contract should specify:

  • Type/Material
  • Color
  • Hinges
  • The contract should specify this and other details of your cabinetry down to the nth detail.

Another way to avoid potential pitfalls with a home remodeling contractor is to make sure you have a provision in your contract that states that all materials will be on site before the project starts. This is important in order to make sure that you know what you are getting and you have a way to verify it. Again, iron out the details!

For example, I have a client who was doing a remodel and is a HGTV show nut. He was remodeling the 2nd story of his house and was very concerned about the creaking noise that are commonly made by wooden stairs. The solution that he derived from watching many HGTV shows are to use screw nails and glue, which is the way he wanted it done. So we specified in his contract that the stairs would be one this way because most contractors would resort to using a nail gun. That was specified in the contract so that we can hold them to it if there was a problem.
